Keep your team connected on an Intranet

Are you using an Intranet to keep your remote workers engaged and feeling involved?

Sure, conference calls and web conferencing are important tools to use regularly for meetings, training, product launches and other great moments in your day-to-day company lives.

An intranet can provide your team with a platform for day-to-day collaboration, a spot for housing important files, forms, guides and policies, and a common ground for everyone to get to know each other. It’s your behind-the-garden-wall website, a place for employees, managers and executive to share information and discuss the company, the projects and the industry … away from the prying eyes of the outside world.

Think of it as Facebook for work … no wait, don’t. Nobody wants to see pictures of anyone’s cat in 27 dresses.

But I kid.

Last week, we saw our Twitter friend, @telesaur, retweet the following statement from Intranet Benchmarking Forum:

A social #intranet gives every employee a face and a voice.

It made me think. How big does your company have to be before it might need an Intranet platform? Or is no company too small?

Telesaur, a company that promotes in “work done anywhere,” such as telework, workshifting and work from home, says anyone can benefit.

Ephraim Freed, an Internet nerd who is “passionate about humanizing business thinking,” replied that companies with less than 50 employees often have an “organic collection of tools,” rather than an Intranet platform. Then there’s that one little other issue:

While a part-time intranet manager — someone who updates, edits and manages the platform — is a necessary resource, Telesaur suggested for small companies to start with a wiki. MediaWiki is a free, open-source platform that can be installed on any server. Many web hosts offer one-click installations of MediaWiki.
