Conference calls will become the norm for a mobile workforce

We like a good meeting.

A good come-together hashout gives business teams an opportunity to collaborate and cooperate, to create and innovate, and to understand tone and context of words, voices and body language. It can promote better opportunities for your team to network, communicate and understand each other.

business meeting

A 2009 Forbes.com survey of businesses revealed most executives prefer face-to-face meetings.

The executives said face-to-face meetings help them achieve such business objectives as:

✓ Persuasion

✓ Leadership

✓ Engagement

✓ Inspiration

✓ Decision-making

✓ Accountability

✓ Brainstorming

✓ Strategy

Ever-improving technology, however, lets us explore meetings in the virtual space. The 20 per cent of executives who preferred virtual meetings said they save time and money, and offer flexibility in location and timing.

It may be time for Forbes to update the survey and see if any executives’ opinions have changed.

After all, telework and flexible schedules are about to hit a growth spurt in the workplace. Many businesses are recognizing the benefits of letting staff work from home — for both employee and employer.

The value of conference calls

That means we have to meet in the virtual space, making use of remote workers spend their time together trying harder to connect and making efficient use of the time they have during conference calls.

And they become better communicators.

“Because leaders of far-flung teams have to use videoconferencing, instant messaging, email, voicemail and, yes, the telephone to make contact, they become proficient in multiple forms of communication, an advantage in leadership that their traditional counterparts could well develop but not automatically,” Edinger said.

The theory behind telecommuting hasn’t changed in several years, nor have the benefits like productivity and employee engagement and happiness.

But with the projected trends, the attitudes seem to have altered.

For the better.

Your turn

Will your company be sending more employees home to telecommute? Are you hoping you will be given the opportunity?
